Lubricant guide: water-based, silicone or hybrid?

Lubricant makes almost any intimate experience more comfortable, whether alone, with a partner or with toys. The key is choosing the right base.
Water-based lubricants
The most versatile option. They are compatible with latex and polyisoprene condoms and with toys of any material, including silicone. They wash off easily and don't stain. The downside: they can dry out, so you may need to reapply or add a little water.
Silicone-based lubricants
Long-lasting and very slippery, which makes them popular for massage and for use in water. They are condom-safe, but they can damage silicone toys, so use them with glass, steel or hard plastic toys, or test on a small area first. They need soap and water to wash off.
Hybrid lubricants
A water base with a small amount of silicone: a creamy texture that lasts longer than water-based lube. Check the label for toy compatibility.
Oil-based lubricants
Good for massage, but not compatible with latex condoms, which they can weaken. Avoid them if you rely on condoms for contraception or protection.
Ingredients worth checking
- If you have sensitive skin, choose fragrance-free formulas without warming or tingling agents.
- Some people are sensitive to glycerine or certain preservatives; if you notice irritation, stop using the product and try a different formula.
- Flavoured lubricants are designed for oral use; check the label before using them elsewhere.
