Adults-only lifestyle resorts and cruises for couples: Desire, Temptation and how to choose
Updated 29 October 2026
Lifestyle resorts are adults-only hotels designed for couples who want a sensual, open-minded holiday: clothing-optional areas, themed parties and an atmosphere where nobody bats an eyelid. They are not all the same, and choosing the wrong one can spoil an expensive trip. Here's what the different types mean, how the two best-known brands compare, and the etiquette worth knowing.
At a glance
- Couples only, clothing-optional, lifestyle atmosphere: Desire (Riviera Maya and cruises).
- Adults-only party, topless-optional: Temptation (Cancun and cruises).
- Looking for naturism, with no sexual side: that's something else (see the end of this guide).
Four terms people often mix up
- Adults-only: no children, but otherwise a normal hotel atmosphere.
- Topless-optional: topless sunbathing is allowed at the pool and on the beach. Nothing more.
- Clothing-optional: in designated areas (pool, beach, hot tubs) you can go without clothes. Lobbies and restaurants usually require clothing.
- Lifestyle: on top of the above, the resort makes it easy for couples who want to meet and play with other couples (themed parties, private spaces). Taking part is never compulsory.
Desire: couples only, clothing-optional
Desire is the couples brand of Mexico's Original Resorts & Cruises. It offers upscale all-inclusive stays with a sensual concept: clothing-optional areas, playrooms, shared hot tubs and themed activities.
- Desire Riviera Maya Resort: beachfront, near Puerto Morelos on Mexico's Riviera Maya, around 20 km from Cancun airport. Couples aged 21 and over only, with a clothing-optional beach, pool and hot tubs; clothing is required in the lobby and restaurants.
- Desire Pearl Riviera Maya Resort: the sister resort, also couples only, with the same clothing-optional concept and spaces to meet other couples.
- Desire Cruises: couples-only sailings with clothing-optional areas and the same atmosphere as the resorts. They run on set dates with itineraries that change every season: check the calendar on the Desire website.
Temptation: an adults-only party in Cancun
Temptation is the group's other brand, with a livelier, party-led feel.
- Temptation Cancun Resort: beachfront in Cancun's Hotel Zone. Adults 21+ only, all-inclusive, topless-optional beach and pool areas, music, shows and themed nights. Unlike Desire, it isn't limited to couples: groups of friends go too.
- Temptation Cruises: the cruise version, which the group describes as spicier than the resort.

Etiquette: what to know
- Consent comes first. No means no, first time, without pushing. Staying at a lifestyle resort doesn't commit you to anything: plenty of couples just enjoy the atmosphere.
- No photos or videos in shared areas. Discretion is part of the deal.
- Clothes where required: lobbies, restaurants and certain times of day.
- Talk first. Agree your boundaries before you travel, not in the middle of a party. If it's your first time, going just to look and soak up the atmosphere is completely normal.
Before you book
- Read the small print: minimum age, ID checks at check-in, and what the all-inclusive does and doesn't cover.
- Check the dates: cruises sail on fixed dates and often sell out well in advance.
- Sexual health: pack condoms you trust and a good lube (see our lube guide). If you plan to play with others, get an STI test before and after the trip.
- Toys in your luggage: see travelling with intimate toys.
Other well-known options
Outside the Original group, one of the best-known resorts of this kind is Hedonism II in Negril, Jamaica, which has a clothing-optional side and a nude side.
If what appeals is simply being without clothes in a relaxed, non-sexual setting, naturism is for you, and it is a different world: sexual behaviour in public is not allowed at naturist venues.
