How to clean and care for your intimate toys

Updated 15 October 2026

Cleaning your toys before and after each use is the simplest way to keep them hygienic and make them last. It only takes a minute.

Check whether the toy is waterproof

Read the manufacturer's instructions first. Waterproof toys can be rinsed under the tap; splash-proof toys should only be wiped, and the charging port must stay dry.

A basic cleaning routine

  1. Wash with warm water and a mild, unscented soap, or a dedicated toy cleaner.
  2. Pay attention to seams, buttons and textured areas.
  3. Rinse well so no soap residue remains.
  4. Pat dry with a clean, lint-free cloth or let it air-dry completely.

Deeper cleaning

Toys made of solid silicone with no motor, glass or stainless steel can usually be boiled for a few minutes. Never boil anything with electronics or a battery inside.

What to avoid

  • Alcohol, bleach or harsh household cleaners: they can damage the surface and irritate skin.
  • Putting motorised toys in the dishwasher.
  • Sharing porous toys. If a toy is shared, cover it with a new condom each time.

Storage

Store toys clean and dry, ideally in a fabric pouch, and keep silicone toys from touching each other, as some materials can react. Remove batteries from toys you rarely use and charge rechargeable toys every few months.
