How to choose your first vibrator: a beginner's guide
Updated 29 October 2026
Shopping for a first vibrator can feel overwhelming: there are dozens of shapes, intensities and price points. This guide covers the essentials so you can decide calmly and without overspending.
1. Decide what kind of stimulation you want
- Bullet vibrators: small, versatile and affordable. A good way to find out what you like.
- Rabbit (dual) vibrators: combine internal and external stimulation in one toy.
- G-spot vibrators: curved at the tip to reach the front wall of the vagina.
- Wand massagers: larger heads and deeper, rumbly vibrations; popular for external use and for massage.
- Clitoral suction toys: use pulses of air pressure instead of direct vibration. See our guide to suction toys.
2. Check the material
Body-safe silicone is the material most experts recommend: it is non-porous, comfortable and easy to clean. Avoid toys with a strong chemical smell or vague labels such as "jelly". More detail in which materials are safe.
3. Rechargeable or battery-powered?
Rechargeable toys save money on batteries and are usually more powerful. Check charging time and battery life in the product description. Waterproof models are easier to clean and can be used in the shower or bath.
4. Think about noise and size
If you share your home, look for toys described as quiet or whisper-quiet. For a first toy, a moderate size is usually more comfortable than something large.
5. Start gently
The lowest settings are often enough at first. Build up gradually and use a water-based lubricant: our lubricant guide explains why, and our pick of the best water-based lubes saves you the search. If you want ideas on exploring what you like, some sex educators use guided exercises and ethical erotic films: see our guide to ethical porn.
6. Set a sensible budget
Already know which type you want? Our best vibrators guide lists specific models by type and budget, with today's UK prices.
You don't need to spend a lot to start. A well-made mid-range toy from a reputable shop is better value than a very cheap toy of unknown material. Always buy from shops that list the material and offer a warranty.
