How to choose a water-based lube
- Texture: thin, liquid lubes feel more natural; gels last longer and drip less. For anal sex, choose a thick one: see our anal lube guide.
- Fragrance-free if you have sensitive skin.
- Glycerine: if you're prone to thrush, some people prefer glycerine- and sugar-free formulas.
- Packaging: pumps and flip-caps are less messy and more hygienic.
- Size: 100–250 ml bottles are usually cheaper per ml than travel sizes; sachets are handy to carry.
Getting the most out of it
Use a generous amount on your body and on the toy or condom. If it starts to feel tacky, add a little more or a few drops of water to revive it. In the shower, silicone lube works better because water-based lube washes away. Using toys? Here are the vibrators we recommend and the best suction toys.

FAQ
Is water-based lube condom-safe?
Yes, with both latex and polyisoprene condoms. It's the safest type if you use condoms.
Can I use water-based lube with silicone toys?
Yes. Unlike silicone lube, water-based lube won't damage any toy material.
Why does water-based lube dry out?
The water evaporates and is absorbed by the skin. Just reapply or add a few drops of water. For more staying power, try a gel texture or a hybrid lube.
Does it stain sheets?
Usually not: it washes out with water. Silicone and oil-based lubes are more likely to leave marks.
Is water-based lube OK for anal sex?
Yes, but choose a thick formula and use plenty. Dedicated anal lubes are usually thicker and longer-lasting.
